1. Information We Collect

Daily Explainer is a static website that collects minimal information:

• Contact Form Submissions: If you use our contact form, we collect the information you voluntarily provide (name, subject, message). This data is saved locally on your device as a downloadable file and is not transmitted to our servers.
• Email newsletter: If you subscribe, we store your email address, whether you confirmed it, the explainer page you signed up from, the cadence you chose (daily, weekly, or monthly), and the first-touch source described below (referring site, utm parameters, landing page). Confirmation and daily explainers are sent from notifications.dailyexplainer.org. The Prior Update is a separate list with its own cadence.
• Push Notification Subscriptions: If you subscribe to push notifications, your browser creates a subscription that is stored locally and may be sent to our notification service to deliver updates.
• Service Worker Data: Our service worker may cache content locally on your device to improve performance and enable offline access.

2. How We Use Information

We use collected information solely to:

• Respond to contact form submissions (when you choose to share them)
• Deliver the email newsletter and push notifications you've requested
• Improve the service and user experience

3. Data Storage

Daily Explainer operates as a static website hosted on GitHub Pages. Contact form submissions are saved as files on your device only—they are not stored on our servers unless you explicitly share them with us.

Push notification subscriptions are stored in your browser and may be registered with our notification service to enable delivery of updates.

4. Cookies and Tracking

When Cloudflare Web Analytics is enabled, a cookie-less beacon counts page views on this site. It does not follow you across other websites. This site also stores a first-touch note in your browser (localStorage) with the page you landed on, the referring site (host and path only), and any utm parameters in the link you opened. That note is sent with anonymous funnel counts (an explainer was viewed, a share button was used, a signup was started, a signup form was completed, or a confirmation link was opened) and, if you subscribe, is saved with your email signup so we can see which sources bring readers. Those counts can include the explainer slug and the cadence you picked. They do not include your email address. We do not store your IP address in that database. The same local storage may also remember preferences such as a dismissed banner.

5. Third-Party Services

Daily Explainer may link to external websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party sites. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.

If you subscribe to push notifications, your subscription data may be processed by our notification service provider to deliver updates.

6. Browser Information

Like all websites, our hosting provider (GitHub Pages) may log standard web server information such as:

• IP addresses
• Browser type and version
• Pages visited
• Referrer URLs
• Access timestamps

This information is used for technical purposes (security, troubleshooting) and is subject to GitHub's privacy policy.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access any personal information we may have
• Request deletion of your data
• Unsubscribe from push notifications at any time
• Clear local storage data through your browser settings
