Why do civilizations rise and fall?

Civilizations rise when societies achieve robust organization, technology and resources – e.g. agriculture boosts food supply, trade expands wealth, and institutions (laws, education) stabilize order. However, no civilization lasts forever. They can decline due to internal and external stresses. Common factors include economic or environmental strain (resource depletion, drought), social inequality or corruption eroding cohesion, political decay, and invasions or pandemics. Classic theories (Ibn Khaldun, Joseph Tainter, Jared Diamond) suggest that as societies become more complex, the effort to maintain them outstrips their resources. Eventually a breakdown occurs: central authority weakens, infrastructure decays, or conquest by outsiders happens. In summary, civilizations often collapse when they can no longer adapt to challenges – whether from natural causes, economic pressures, or human conflict – leading to a loss of social and political structure.
