What net zero means
Net zero (or carbon neutrality) occurs when anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions equal removals. It doesn't mean zero emissions—some sectors (aviation, agriculture) have residual emissions that must be offset by sinks. Natural sinks include forests, soil, and oceans that absorb CO2. Engineered removal includes afforestation, BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture), direct air capture, and enhanced weathering. Achieving net zero requires: drastically reducing emissions (electrifying transport, industry, buildings; shifting to renewables), enhancing natural sinks (reforestation, regenerative agriculture), and deploying removal technologies for unavoidable emissions. How to get there

Greenwashing and loopholes
Corporate net-zero pledges often rely on low-quality offsets rather than real emissions cuts. Accounting tricks hide emissions—Scope 3 (supply chain) emissions often excluded. Distant targets (2050) with weak near-term action delay meaningful change. Some offset entire emissions with tree-planting despite carbon remaining in atmosphere for decades while trees grow. Carbon removal technologies remain unproven at scale, yet pledges assume they'll work. True net zero requires: near-term targets (2030), absolute emissions cuts before relying on offsets, science-based methods verified by third parties, transparency, and offsets only for genuinely unavoidable emissions. Regulators and standards bodies are tightening requirements to combat greenwashing.

Myth: Net zero means stopping all emissions. Reality: It means balancing emissions with removals; some hard-to-eliminate emissions will persist. Myth: We can just plant trees to reach net zero. Reality: Tree offsets are part of the solution but take decades to mature, are vulnerable to fire, and can't compensate for ongoing fossil fuel use at scale. Myth: Technology will save us without lifestyle changes. Reality: Technology is necessary but insufficient; demand reduction (less flying, meat consumption, consumption) is also required. Myth: Individual actions don't matter. Reality: Collective individual change drives political will and creates markets for alternatives. Myth: Net zero is a distant goal. Reality: To reach it by 2050, emissions must halve by 2030—requiring immediate, aggressive action.
