What is a volcano?

BLUF: A volcano is an opening in a planet's surface where molten rock, gas, and ash from deep inside escape upward. Over time, the erupted material piles up into the familiar mountains we also call volcanoes.

Volcanoes build new land, shape climate, and offer a direct window into the churning heat that drives a planet's interior.

How a volcano works

A volcano is a vent in a planet's crust connected to a reservoir of molten rock, called magma, stored below. Because magma is lighter than the surrounding solid rock and charged with dissolved gases, it rises through cracks toward the surface. As it climbs, pressure drops and those gases expand, sometimes gently pushing lava out and sometimes shattering the rock in an explosion. Once magma reaches the air or seafloor, it is called lava. Repeated eruptions stack lava, ash, and cinders around the vent, gradually constructing the cone or dome we recognize as a mountain. The plumbing beneath the surface, made of chambers, conduits, and fractures, can stay active for thousands of years.

Heat escaping from within

The deeper story is heat escaping from a planet's interior. Earth's core and mantle hold enormous thermal energy left over from formation and from decaying radioactive elements. This heat drives slow churning in the mantle and the drifting of rigid tectonic plates above it. Most volcanoes sit where plates meet. Where one plate dives beneath another, water released from the sinking slab lowers the melting point of the rock above and generates magma; where plates pull apart, mantle rises and melts as pressure falls. A few volcanoes, like those of Hawaii, sit over hotspots, plumes of unusually warm rock far from any plate boundary. In every case, a volcano is simply the surface release valve for a planet cooling from the inside out.

Volcanoes today

Today roughly 1,350 volcanoes on land are considered potentially active, and dozens erupt each year. Many ring the Pacific Ocean in a belt nicknamed the Ring of Fire, where plates collide. Iceland straddles a spreading ridge, Hawaii sits over a hotspot, and Italy, Indonesia, and the Andes host famous cones. Beyond their danger, volcanoes are quietly useful: eruptions create rich soils, build islands and new coastline, and supply geothermal heat and power to countries like Iceland and Kenya. Scientists monitor restless volcanoes with seismometers, gas sensors, and satellites, watching for swelling ground and rising gas that can precede an eruption. Large eruptions can even cool global climate for a year or two by hazing the stratosphere with reflective particles.

Common misconceptions

Myth: volcanoes are always tall, cone-shaped mountains. Reality: many are broad shields, flat calderas, or long fissures, and vast volcanic systems lurk unseen along the ocean floor. Myth: lava is the main killer. Reality: most volcanic deaths come from fast-moving flows of hot ash and gas, mudslides, and collapsing debris, not the slow lava you can usually outwalk. Myth: a dormant volcano is safe. Reality: volcanoes can sleep for centuries and reawaken, so quiet is not the same as extinct. Myth: eruptions strike without warning. Reality: modern monitoring often detects telltale earthquakes and gas changes days to weeks ahead, though the exact timing and size remain hard to predict.
