What is the cloud?

The cloud is a network of remote servers owned by companies like Amazon (AWS), Microsoft (Azure), and Google (GCP). Instead of buying your own servers, you rent computing power, storage, and services as needed. You pay only for what you use, similar to a utility bill. The cloud provider manages hardware maintenance, security updates, and physical infrastructure. You access everything via the internet through APIs or web interfaces. Cloud services range from basic (virtual machines) to complex (AI/ML platforms, databases, analytics tools).

Why it transformed technology

Cloud computing democratized access to powerful computing. Startups can launch globally without buying servers. Businesses scale instantly during traffic spikes and scale down afterward, optimizing costs. Development accelerates because teams don't wait for hardware procurement. Data becomes globally accessible for remote work. However, it also creates dependencies—when AWS goes down, much of the internet follows. Cloud providers have enormous power over pricing and terms. Data sovereignty becomes complex when your information lives in foreign data centers.

Service models explained

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Rent virtual machines and configure everything yourself. Platform as a Service (PaaS): Pre-configured environments for building apps—you write code, the platform handles servers. Software as a Service (SaaS): Ready-to-use applications like Gmail or Salesforce. Each model trades control for convenience. Public clouds serve anyone, private clouds serve one organization, hybrid clouds combine both. Edge computing extends cloud services closer to users for lower latency, important for IoT and real-time applications.

Common misconceptions

Myth: The cloud is always cheaper. Reality: Costs can spiral without proper management; some workloads are cheaper on-premise. Myth: Cloud is inherently more secure. Reality: Security is a shared responsibility; misconfigured cloud services are common attack vectors. Myth: Everything should be in the cloud. Reality: Latency-sensitive or highly-regulated workloads may benefit from on-premise or hybrid approaches. Myth: Switching clouds is easy. Reality: Vendor lock-in makes migration complex and expensive.
